Not a lot. They are the main card suppliers. It is the different companies that run them. There are slight differences in facilities etc, but nothing major. Goes back to the early days of credit cards, Visa was, and still is, from Barclays, Mastercard arose out of the old Access cards , operated by a consortium of other banks. so as to save each creating their own cards.

2 different organisations to make money from your spending!

No advantage/disadvantage for either for "normal" person.

Get the lowest APR rate from any retail supplier but get one from each stable to act as backup if the other has problems at any time.

Both are credit cards and do the same, but just a tip, there was hardly anywhere in South Africa I could use my Visa card as all the shops and business's took Mastercard, just one of the advantages i have found of having one on standby.
This may be applicable in other countries also.

The most important thing to note is that neither Visa nor MasterCard really issue credit cards. These companies do not handle consumers or merchants directly. Rather they develop and operate the universal computer networks to process the innumerable transactions that take place every day at various merchants and ATMs. They earn money from financial institutions to whom they have licensed the authority of marketing the MasterCard or Visa system to end consumers and merchants.

Visa and MasterCard are both payment systems, not credit cards in themselves. They rely on providers to issue credit cards using their system. There are no significant differences between them. MasterCard and Visa are the names of the global companies who manage credit cards. They can both be used around the world.

The only main difference between the 2 are the promotions. Mastercard is the newer of the 2 companies so only recently became popular through the Mastercard commercials you see, and the promotions going on for buying tickets to various events.

Each bank chooses who they issue their cards through, but one company is not any better than the other. Both cards are accepted universally in most countries these days.

Interesting fact: All Visa cards start with the number 4 and all Mastercards start with the number 5!!! Go on, check your cards!

There's really not that much difference. I would focus more on what type of extras that you feel would work best for you. Like: rewards, low APR, balance transfers, etc.

There are many credit card sites that make it easy to compare several cards from several providers. I know that http://www.rightcharge.org is a reliable site that makes it easy to compare cards, plus they have a secure on-line application.

I was able to get the best card for me and they sent it to me really quick.

    Good Luck :)
